Happy Holidays from Bedbug!

Hey all,

It's been a heck of a year. I promise Bedbug will return in 2014! In the meantime, have a great holiday!

There's a (bed) bug in Scribblenauts Unmasked!!

So there you are, playing Scribblenauts Unmasked the new DC Universe themed puzzle game from Warner Brothers Interactive (for the Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Microsoft Windows) and all of a sudden you see...!!!

Wait a second, is that Bedbug in Scribblenauts Unmasked? Why yes it is! Let me repeat that... BEDBUG IS IN SCRIBBLENAUTS UNMASKED!!! My very own creation Bedbug appears in the highly anticipated puzzle game that features over 2000 characters from the DC Universe... and one mighty bug-hero from the world of independent comics!

Hold the bat-phone!!! An indy superhero in a major comic book company's video game?! THIS IS A FIRST IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY! But how the heck did Bedbug the single-father superhero, end up rubbing shoulders with the likes of Batman, Superman and the Justice League?
Many years ago, while I was a creative manager at the video game publisher THQ, I was lucky enough to work with Scribblenaut Unmasked's super-talented developers 5th Cell - the creators of Drawn To Life, Drawn to Life The Next Chapter and Lock's Quest (three excellent games you should play!) and became friends with the team.

When I was going through chemotherapy for cancer earlier this year, I used my disability time to write and draw Bedbug #1. (available here!) Well, it just so happened that the President of 5th Cell was following my trials and tribulations on-line and asked if I'd like Bedbug to appear in their upcoming game. I was thrilled, but even more thrilled when he told me the game was Scribblenauts Unmasked.

I couldn't believe it would happen, but at San Diego Comic Con, I was able to see it for myself. If you enter "Bedbug" or "Buddy Sprang" into Scribblenaut Unmasked's word editor, the leapin' lawman himself will jump into action!

What makes this extra special is, not only do I really like the Scribblenauts games, but I am a HUGE DC Comics fan and knowing that Bedbug will be standing side by side with DC's iconic heroes and fighting against the vilest villains (especially my favorite, the Killer Moth!) - well, this comic fan's dream has come true!

Bedbug vs. the Killer Moth!

I got to thank some of the Scribblenauts Unmasked creators in person at San Diego Comic Con

I really want to thank the fine folks at WB Interactive for making this happen and my good friends at 5th Cell for being so thoughtful and generous. Scribblenauts Unleashed is available everywhere video games are sold, so go buy a copy and tell 'em Bedbug sent ya!

The case of the missing Bedbug!

Artist, gentleman cowboy and friend

The above cowpoke is Bill Burns - a long-time friend, wild-west reinactor and fellow action figure customer. You can check out Bill's amazing work at Bill's Customs. We met many years ago online and to my surprise, it turned out he lived in the next city down from me. Together we went on many toy-hunting adventures and shared customizing tips and tricks.

Several years ago, I moved down to LA but we still kept in touch. This year, when Bill found out I was sick, unbeknownst to me, he sprang into action. A month or so ago, I received a mysterious instant message from him asking me if I had received a package from him. "Nope." I replied. I had got a lot of packages in the mail lately (the result of a birthday gift-card induced shopping spree) but nothing from him. "OK, maybe in the next few days" Bill typed.

A week passed with nothing showing up. "Did you get it yet?" Bill asked. "No, nothing today." I replied. "It will show up soon, I'm sure."

Two weeks passed. "You should have gotten a package by now." Bill wrote. "According to USPS tracking, it's already been delivered to your house." I hadn't received anything. I was getting a little nervous myself. It's not like USPS to be so late - especially when they said it had already been delivered.

I posted a sign on our mailbox asking if it had been delivered to someone else. I went door-to-door asking if it had been delivered. I asked the mail carrier to see if it wasn't still back at the post office. I went to the post office to have them check to see if a package for me was in the dead letter pile. Nothing. Struck out on all counts.

After giving Bill the bad news, he sent me pictures of what was in the box. Having heard about my illness, he came out of customizing retirement and created a beautiful 10" custom figure of Bedbug complete with hand-made packaging.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I replied.

Have you seen this missing Bedbug?

I was heartbroken. I had always wanted a Bill Burns made custom and here was a Bedbug figure made especially for me, lost somewhere in the mail. I double-checked with the neighbors and post office but nothing. I gave the figure up for lost.

The next few weeks were busy - San Diego Comic Con and a family vacation to the Grand Canyon kept me away from home. This evening when we returned, a package was waiting for me addressed from Bill. I'm sure I don't need to explain my excitement as I opened it and there was Bill's gorgeous Bedbug smiling back at me.

Home where it belongs!

The figure has already been given a place of honor and I will cherish it forever. Thank you Bill Burns for your talent, generosity, and thoughtfulness and thank you USPS for making my life a little more interesting.

Well worth the wait.

Thank you cancer!

Thank you to everyone who has been purchasing Bedbug #1! I appreciate you supporting my stories about the single-father superhero! But there's one story that wasn't told in the comic. How I couldn't have completed it if I hadn't gotten cancer.

I had always wanted to create a Bedbug comic since 2005 when Shooting Star Comics Anthology wrapped up (in fact, the origin story in Bedbug #1 was originally intended for Shooting Star #7) but for one reason or another, I didn't start writing the main story "Invitation" until 2010. I started drawing the pages right around when I changed jobs. Because of the demands of the new job and its sometimes unusual hours, the comic remained half-finished through 2011 and 2012.

In late fall of 2012 I fell very ill and in early 2013 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma - a cancer that attacks the lymph nodes and lymph producing organs. I was hospitalized for 10 days and after I was released I was told that I had to look forward to disability and six months of treatment.

Chemotherapy, while effective, really wears down your immune system. I received treatment every two weeks and spent one week dealing with the side-effects of chemo while the other week getting my stamina back up to snuff so I could (literally) survive the next week's treatment. It sounds easy - letting your body recover on it's own, but for some reason my body was slow to recover. It got a little scary when I spent a day in the hospital as a result of getting a toe infection.

However, I didn't want to spend my treatment time doing "nothing." (OK, I was recovering but when you're lying there recovering you don't feel like you're doing anything.) Unfortunately my brain was too addled from chemicals to consistently write and my hand would get too unsteady to consistently draw, but I could tackle the project in small dose - a page drawn here, a page electronically colored there, a bit of character bio typed out. Thankfully, I also had many friends and family contributing in their own ways to help reduce the work load.

I have now reached the end of my treatment. I go in for testing in a few weeks to see how effective the 12 sessions of chemotherapy have been. (Fingers crossed) and if I will be able to return to work later this summer. Getting cancer is hard but I can honestly say that I wouldn't have been able to finish Bedbug #1 without it. And for that, I am thankful for cancer.
